HART Route 51X Park-N-Ride Change

Hillsborough Area Regional Transit (HART) will be enacting a service change on Monday, July 17, 2017 for Route 51X, which serves Downtown Tampa, New Tampa, and southeastern Pasco County during weekday rush hours. The change being made is regarding the Park-N-Ride lots that the route currently serves.

In an effort to better serve the southeastern Pasco communities, and to better position HART and Pasco County Transit for future system growth; a new Park-N-Ride lot is nearing completion in the Wiregrass district of Wesley Chapel, on Bruce B. Downs Blvd just south of the Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel campus.

The opening of the new Park-N-Ride will replace two existing Park-N-Ride facilities, one at the Victorious Life Church on Old Pasco Rd, and the other at the Tampa Korean United Methodist Church on County Line Rd. The last day of operation for the two latter Park-N-Ride lots will be on Friday, July 14, 2017.

Final Countdown for South Ferry Loop

The final countdown is on for the many transit fans in New York City to get photos and videos of the old South Ferry Loop subway station before it shuts down for good.

While an official reopening date has yet to be announced by the New York City MTA for the “newer” South Ferry platform – which was damaged by SuperStorm Sandy in 2012, hints have been dropping that the “newer” station will be open before the July 4th holiday. This flyer regarding weekend work on the (2) and (3) lines states that the (2) will detour down the South Ferry-bound tracks to terminate at Rector St during the weekends of June 19th and 26th, but afterward, trains would terminate at the “newer” South Ferry.

I can only guess that at this point, the MTA does not want to announce a date too soon when work is still wrapping up on the rebuilding of the “newer” station. There has been quite a lot of work done on the station and some work will continue on even after the “newer” platforms have reopened. One key element that will be present when the reopening does happen is the water-tight doors that will seal off the platform section if flooding occurs. I’m also hearing that the rebuilt platform will pretty much look identical to how it did when it first opened in 2009, but with some cosmetic changes and LED lighting (instead of fluorescent).

So with all of this said, you might be wondering, “why not just have the (2) train service the South Ferry Loop when it’s being detoured?” From my understanding, the MTA is concerned that rail operators on the (2) and (3) trains might not have the proper training to operate the train doors properly. Only the first five cars of the train can be opened at the loop, a key reason why the “newer” station was built (it was not feasible to expand the loop to accommodate 10-car trains).

To wrap things up, I’m very glad that I got to visit New York City while the South Ferry Loop was still open. I’ll discuss the loop more during my Transit Tourism series on my recent trip. But in the meantime, I already have a video up on YouTube showing the loop, and the adjoining Whitehall St station, that you can watch. I will make an update to this post when the official reopening date for the “newer” South Ferry platform is announced.

HART Network Restructuring – Part 1

You may have heard during the past few months about Hillsborough Area Regional Transit. I’m not talking about the Premium Transit Feasibility Study or OneBusAway; but rather, I’m referring to the planned network restructuring that the agency is currently planning. The massive changes are a part of the normal Transit Development Plan update that HART, and every transit agency throughout the country, is required to perform periodically. Transit Development Plans are put into place to show the public and other government entities throughout the local, state, and federal levels, as to where transit services are now and where they should be in the future. Many factors are taken into consideration when a transit agency performs a TDP update – including demographical changes, funding levels, and vehicle fleet.

HART is currently conducting a system-wide analysis for the first time since the early 2000s and is seeking public feedback on it. The planned changes are aimed at reducing system inefficiencies while improving core service in the more populated sections of Hillsborough County. The re-evaluation comes at a crucial time – when many in the region are still undecided on where our overall transportation network should head towards, overall transit ridership is dropping across the nation due to economic changes and added transportation and work options, a possible reduction in property taxes in 2019, and an uncertain future over federal transit funding due to vastly different priorities between the previous Obama Administration and the current Trump Administration.


What changes are being made?

Much of the HART bus system as it exists today will be radically different. Many low ridership routes will be eliminated in favor of increasing frequency on higher ridership areas. HART Flex services will be reorganized, as will express bus service. HyperLINK services will ultimately get a boost in service, and overall duplication of stops and routes will be reduced. HART is also looking to serve a couple of areas where demand for transit service is high but aren’t being served yet.

You can view all of the planned changes on the HART Website, but I will highlight a few of the most significant changes.

  • Closure of the West Tampa Transfer Center
  • Elimination of Route 2, being replaced by optimized MetroRapid service that will operate on weekends as well.
  • Reorganization of Routes 7 & 30 (including removing Route 30 from the airport loop. Route 30 would eventually serve the new TPA Airport CONRAC facility).
  • Reorganization of Express services.
  • Expansion/Reorganization of HART Flex services.
  • Expansion of HyperLINK services.
  • Implementation of Uber/Lyft Discount Vouchers for late evening and overnight hours (where it is no longer feasible to run regular buses during the late nights with few riders on board).

PSTA June 4, 2017 Service Changes

On Sunday, June 4, 2017, the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) will be enacting scheduling changes to the Central Ave Trolley, as well as Routes 18, 34, 66L, and 67. The most significant changes will be to the trolley and Route 34.

New schedules are available at www.psta.net.


Central Ave Trolley

The Central Ave Trolley (Route 35) will see the following changes to improve efficiency and also allow better connections to the Suncoast Beach Trolley during the week.

Monday through Thursday:
*Streamlined departures (buses will depart every 20 minutes during the day, and every 30 minutes during the evening).
*6:10AM trip from Grand Central will now travel to Pass-A-Grille.
*First AM trip leaving The Pier Parking Lots will now be at 6:05AM.
*10:50PM trip to Downtown St. Pete, will travel all the way to The Pier Parking Lots.

Fridays:
*Streamlined departures (buses will depart every 20 minutes during the day, and every 30 minutes during the evening).
*Last departure to Downtown St. Pete will now be 11:50PM
*Last departure to Pass-A-Grille will now be 10:35PM
*Last departure to 75th Ave/Gulf Blvd will now be 11:05PM

Saturdays:
*Streamlined departures (buses will depart every 30 minutes all day).
*6:30AM trip from 75th Ave/Gulf Blvd will be eliminated (unproductive trip).
*Last departure to The Pier Parking Lots will now be at 11:00PM.
*10:10PM round trip from The Pier Parking Lots will still terminate at Grand Central Station on the eastbound return, but will now depart from the lots at 10:15PM.
*After the 10:15PM departure from The Pier Parking Lots, buses will run to 75th Ave/Gulf Blvd only (these departures will be at 10:45PM, 11:15PM, and 11:45PM). Last buses leaving 75th Ave/Gulf Blvd will be 12:05AM and 12:30AM.

Sundays:
*Streamlined departures (buses will depart every 30 minutes all day).
*Last departure to The Pier Parking Lots will now be at 11:00PM.
*10:10PM round trip from The Pier Parking Lots will still terminate at Grand Central Station on the eastbound return, but will now depart from the lots at 10:15PM.


Route 18

*Downtown St. Pete terminating point will now be at 1st Ave N and 6th St N, instead of 1st Ave N and 3rd St
N.
*Last southbound Weekday trip (at 11:05PM) will now terminate in Downtown St. Pete, instead of Seminole City
Center.
*Minor running time changes.


Route 34

*Sunday frequency will increase from every 60 minutes (running two buses) to every 50 minutes (running three
buses).


Route 66L

*The 5:10AM and 6:15AM southbound departures from Pinellas Ave and Dodecanese Blvd will now start at Tarpon
Ave and Huey Ave (behind Tarpon Mall) at 5:00AM and 6:05AM respectively.
*Timepoint and running time corrections have been made.


Route 67

*Minor running time changes.

LYNX April, 2017 Service Changes

The Central Florida Regional Transportation Authority (which does business as LYNX) will be enacting service changes on Sunday, April 30, 2017. These changes will largely comprise of scheduling adjustments, but four routes (links) will see some sort of routing change. You can access the revised schedules on the LYNX website and printed schedules will be distributed soon.


Routing Changes

  • Link 45 – Lake Mary (Seminole County) – All weekday trips will serve the Lake Mary SunRail station. Minor schedule adjustments will also be enacted.
  • Link 63 – LYMMO Orange-North Quarter (Orange County) – All trips will be extended to the LYNX Central Station via Amelia Street. This change will allow customers to access both Orange Line segments from the terminal. Additional stops will be added at LYNX Central Station, Orange Avenue/Amelia Street and Livingston Street/Orange Avenue.
  • Link 319 – Richmond Heights (Orange County) – Buses from LYNX Central Station will use Terry Avenue, South Street and Parramore Avenue. New stops will be added at Terry Avenue/Church Street.
  • Link 427 – U.S. 27/Haines City (Lake County/Orange County/Osceola County/Polk County) – The segment in downtown Haines City will be modified to operate along East Main Street between 5th and 10th instead of East Hinson Avenue. Bus stops will be added at East Main Street and 8th Street.

Scheduling Changes

  • Link 8 – West Oak Ridge Road/International Drive (Orange County) – Minor schedule adjustments will be enacted to improve efficiency. A trip from Orlando Vineland Premium Outlets at 9:05 p.m. will be added on Sundays.
  • Link 9 – Winter Park/Rosemont (Orange County) – The weekday 7:55 p.m. trip from Rosemont SuperStop will extend to Winter Park SunRail Station. The current 9:10 p.m. departure from Denning Drive/Webster Avenue will now start from the Winter Park SunRail Station at 8:45 p.m.
  • Link 37 – Pine Hills/Florida Mall (Orange County) – A trip will be added at 10 p.m. on Sundays from Florida Mall SuperStop.
    Link 107 – U.S. 441/Florida Mall (Orange County) – A trip will be added at 10 p.m. on Sundays from Florida Mall SuperStop.
  • Link 108 – South U.S. 441/Kissimmee (Orange County/Osceola County) – The Sunday 9:40 p.m. departure from Florida Mall SuperStop will be changed to 9:50 p.m.
  • FastLink 441 – Kissimmee/Downtown Orlando (Orange County/Osceola County) – Minor schedule adjustments will be enacted to improve efficiency. A new bus stop will be added at Orange Blossom Trail and Wetherbee Road.
  • Minor schedule adjustments will be enacted on Links 7, 13, 18, 20, 24, 26, 125, Xpress Link 208, Link 405, Link 443, and NeighborLink 622 to improve efficiency.

LYNX Central Station Bus Loading Bay Changes

Bus bay assignments at the LYNX Central Station will change accordingly to read the following:

  • Bay C – Link 63 LYMMO Orange Line-North Quarter
  • Bay D – Link 50
  • Bay E – Links 36 and 40
  • Bay M – Links 21, 54 and 441
  • Bay P – Link 107
  • Bay X – Links 7, 11 and 18
  • Bay Y – Link 125

SCAT April, 2017 Service Changes

Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT) will be enacting service changes during the weekend of April 15 and 16. These changes will affect more than half of the SCAT system. Schedules will be posted to the SCAT website soon, and printed schedules will be available on or after April 10, 2017.


  • Route 1: Buses will remain on Apex/Coburn east of I-75 and will no longer travel on E. Sawgrass Rd.
  • Route 1 Sunday: Route will be reconfigured around Cattlemen Transfer Center. Buses will enter the station via Cattlemen Rd/Bahia Vista
  • Route 2: Routing will be reconfigured around SRQ Airport.
  • Routes 5 and 6: Minor time point adjustments will be enacted to improve efficiency.
  • Route 7: The 5:10AM trip will no longer enter Newtown Estates
  • Route 9: Route will extend to Toledo Blade, North Port Emergency Clinic, Shannon Staub Public Library, and Suncoast Technical College. The 5:05AM trip to Venice will be eliminated.
  • Routes 10 and 10 Sunday: Due to the launch of the Siesta Key Breeze trolley, the 10 will be eliminated. Route 11 will continue service into Siesta Key and will see no changes.
  • Route 13: Frequency will reduce to every 2 hours between Venice Train Depot to Venice Island and will remain on US 41 Business. New Route 23 will serve Venice Island.
  • Routes 14 and 14 Sunday: Minor scheduling adjustments will be made to improve efficiency. A late-evening partial trip will also be added.
  • Route 15: Route will be reconfigured from the Sarasota Pavilion Transfer Center; via Gateway and Stickney Pt. Rd and also around SRQ Airport.
  • Route 16: Frequency will reduce to every 2 hours. The segment on East Dearborn St./Pine St will be eliminated. Buses will instead travel to Englewood Hospital from S.R. 776, McCall Rd., and Pine St. via Merchants Crossing Shopping Plaza.
  • Routes 18 and 18 Sunday (and the MCAT Longboat Key Trolley): Due to the launch of the new MCAT-operated Longboat Key Shuttle, the existing Longboat Key Trolley service will be eliminated. Please visit the MCAT website to learn more about the new reservation-based shuttle service. SCAT will continue to operate a revised Route 18 that will terminate at Bay Isles.
  • Route 23 (NEW): Venice Circulator: This route will operate as a one-way loop from Venice Train Depot to Venice Beach, Venice Community Center, Venice Shopping Plaza on Golf Dr. and Guild St. before returning to the Venice Train Depot.
  • Route 26 (NEW): Englewood Beaches: This route will travel from Englewood Hospital to Old Englewood Village on West Dearborn St. via Englewood Beach.
  • Route 28: Route will end at North Port City Hall. Riders traveling to East Price Blvd. and Toledo Blade Blvd. should transfer at North Port City Hall Park and Ride.
  • Route 30: Route will be reconfigured around SRQ Airport, and the last trip at 10:25 p.m. from UTC to Lakewood Ranch will be eliminated.
  • Seasonal Route 33: Route will be discontinued for season and service will resume in November 2017.
  • Route 99: The final trip from SRQ Airport to Downtown Sarasota, will be adjusted to depart at 10:25pm instead of 10:00pm to allow for connections from the last Route 30 trip from the University Town Center (UTC) area.
  • Route 215 Sunday: Route will be reconfigured around SRQ Airport.
  • Route 1713 Sunday: Time points will be adjusted on the last trip of the evening.
  • Route 100X: Route will be revised to only operate Monday through Friday (due to ultra low Saturday ridership). Service to the Laurel Industrial Center will be reduced to only a select couple of trips.

Changes to the HRT Virginia Beach WAVE Trolley/Shuttle

May is only about a month away! Which means summer will not be far behind it. With tourist season approaching for the Virginia Beach area, Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) is announcing changes to the Virginia Beach WAVE seasonal trolley service. Below is a quick summary of what changes are in store for this year.


Route 30 – Atlantic Ave Trolley

Route 31 will continue to operate in its normal fashion beginning May 1, 2017. Between May 1 and May 21, trolleys will operate roughly every 30 to 45 minutes. From May 22 through Labor Day, regular summer service will begin with trolleys operating roughly every 15 minutes. Between Labor Day and September 30, service will begin winding down for the season with trolleys operating roughly every 30 to 45 minutes. Span of service is from 8:00am until 2:00am (the next morning) 7-days-a-week.


Route 32 – Aquarium and Campground Shuttle

Route 32 will also continue to operate in its normal fashion, with service beginning May 22 and running through Labor Day. Buses will operate roughly every 20 minutes 7-days-a-week, from 9:30am until 11:10pm. Note: The Virginia Aquarium and Ocean Breeze stops are only serviced during normal business hours.


Route 33 – Shoppers Shuttle (ELIMINATED)

Due to ultra-low ridership, HRT has eliminated the Shoppers Shuttle service. Those wishing to connect between the Virginia Beach Oceanfront and the Virginia Beach shopping/mall district can do so via the following alternative bus routes.

  • Route 20 connects to the Hilltop Shopping District with 30-minute service Monday through Saturday and hourly Sunday service+. Those wishing to travel to Lynnhaven Mall can transfer to Route 29 at Laskin Rd and First Colonial Rd. Route 29 operates Monday through Saturday with hourly service.
  • Express (MAX) Route 960 connects to the Virginia Beach Convention Center via the Parks Ave/20th St stop. Those wishing to visit the Virginia Beach Museum of Contemporary Art (M.O.C.A.) can get off at this stop and walk northward to the museum.

*VB WAVE Routes 30 and 31 will continue to provide service to Rudee Inlet
+Route 20 continues to Norfolk with 15-30 minute service between Downtown Norfolk and Pembroke East on weekdays (not all trips go all the way to the Oceanfront during rush hours). Be sure that you’re boarding the correct bus if you’re traveling from Norfolk to the Oceanfront.


Route 35 – North End Shuttle (NEW)

Route 35 will be introduced to serve First Landing State Park, the North End beaches, and the various eateries along Shore Dr. Service will operate 7-days-a-week from May 22 until Labor Day, with buses running roughly every 45 minutes from 8:00am through 12-midnight. After Labor Day, buses will operate Friday through Sunday only with 45-minute service from 8:00am through 12-midnight.

HART Service Changes – Effective 3/26/17

On Sunday, March 26, 2017, Hillsborough Area Regional Transit (HART) will enact minor scheduling and running time changes to Routes 5, 7, 12, and 32. On Monday, March 27, changes will be effective on Routes 31, 36, 46, 47LX, 53LX, 57, and 200X.

The most significant changes are that Routes 36 and 46 get a weeknight service boost. Instead of the routes cutting off after 9:00pm, both routes will have trips running as late as 11:00pm. Schedules can be obtained at gohart.org, and printed schedules will be available after March 19, 2017.

What about New Tampa Flex?

For those of you wondering about if and when the planned New Tampa Flex route will launch, unfortunately, the plans are on hold for now. Due to falling ridership across the nation, and possible funding reductions at the state and federal levels, plus a possible shakeup of TBARA and the ongoing controversy around Tampa Bay Express – HART is currently preparing for the grim possibility of enacting across-the-board service cuts come 2019. It’s something that I’ve been fearing for a long time and I hope that key routes will not be cut. However, some lower ridership routes may be re-aligned, merged, or eliminated, and much of the entire HART network as it stands today will radically change over the next few years. Winter 2017 Service Change Roundup – PSTA, Votran, and HRT

It’s that time again; time to implement another round of service changes. This time, I was a tad late in posting the January, 2017 changes for Hampton Roads Transit and Volusia County Transit. So I decided to roll in those changes into one blog post with the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority’s February, 2017 service changes.

This round of changes saw mostly frequency and/or span of service increases for both PSTA and Votran, while HRT saw a round of scheduling and/or routing adjustments and two route eliminations. The biggest change for HRT is the discontinuation of hold requests.

What exactly is a hold request? Let’s say that you’re on the last trip of the evening and need to make a transfer. But the bus that you’re transferring to departs three minutes before the bus that you’re on is scheduled to arrive at the transfer point. Some transit agencies will allow you to place a hold request so that the bus that you’re transferring to will wait a few extra minutes for you to arrive.

With transit agency budgets getting tighter and efficiency improvements becoming more important than ever before, many transit agencies have decided to do away with hold requests to help keep buses running on time. PSTA is one of the transit agencies in West Central Florida that continues to honor hold requests. HART revised its hold request procedures a few years ago to where customers can only place a hold request during the last two trips of the evening, though exceptions may be made during the first trip of the morning.


Hampton Roads Transit (HRT)

Here’s a brief overview of the service changes that took effect for HRT back on January 16, 2017.

  • Route 25: Minor scheduling changes were enacted to improve efficiency.
  • Route 33: Routing changes were enacted near the Artic Ave & 19th St Transfer Point to improve efficiency. Please see the graphic below for details.c9231ce1-34f0-4790-96f0-7eb0a38b2182
  • Route 55: The last three trips departing Greenbriar Mall were adjusted to improve connectivity to other routes at the Robert Hall Transfer Point.
  • Route 57: Western terminus adjusted from Sunkist Rd/Airline Blvd. to Airline Blvd. and Quailshire Ln.
  • Route 58: The Mains Creek Rd deviation was discontinued. Buses now stay on Libertyville Rd between Mullen Rd & Great Bridge Blvd. Please see the graphic below for details.

  • Changes to the Robert Hall Transfer Point: The transfer point was split into two boarding zones to expedite easier and quicker transfers. Zone A serves Routes 14, 55, 57, & 58, while Zone B serves Routes 6 ,13, & 15.

  • Route 101: Minor scheduling changes were enacted to improve efficiency.
  • Route 107: Scheduling changes were made to improve connectivity other routes at Patrick Henry Mall.
  • Route 111: Routing changes were made to the Jefferson Ave segment to where buses travel bi-directionally along Jefferson Ave, Thimble Shoals Blvd, Fishing Point Dr, and City Center Blvd.  Northbound buses previously traveled clockwise via Jefferson Ave, City Center Blvd, Fishing Point Blvd, Thimble Shoals Blvd, and then back to Jefferson Ave and City Center Blvd. Please see the graphic below for details.

  • Route 968 (Route Elimination): This route was operating on a test basis to evaluate transit service to key employment centers. Unfortunately, it was eliminated due to ultra-low ridership.
  • Route 969 (Route Elimination): This route was operating on a test basis to evaluate transit service to key employment centers. Unfortunately, it was eliminated due to ultra-low ridership.

Changes to the HRT Website

Locating bus schedules on www.gohrt.com has changed.  All routes are now separated by area (i.e. Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Hampton) with separate pages on the Peninsula Commuter and Metro Area Express routes remaining intact. Previously, you could view a list of northside and southside bus routes without having to go through the area pages.


Volusia County Transit (Votran)

Here’s a brief overview of the service changes that took effect for Votran back on January 24, 2017.

  • Route 20: Frequency was increased from hourly service to every 30 minutes Monday through Saturday, interlining with Route 60 was discontinued, and the northern terminus was shifted to the Amelia Ave SuperStop (Transfer Point) by the Northgate Shopping Center. The DeLand WalMart on US Hwy 17 is now only served by southbound trips to the Market Place Transfer Point.
  • Routes 21 & 22: Departure times from the Market Place Transfer Point were changed to :25 past the hour to allow quicker transfers between these routes and the improved Route 20. The first trips of the morning on both the 21 & 22 no longer enter Deltona City Center.
  • Route 23: Departure times from the Market Place Transfer Center were changed to :20 past the hour.
  • Route 33: The SunRail weekday feeder route between DuPont Lakes and the DeBary SunRail station is no longer classified as an express route. Buses will stop at all marked Votran bus stops along the route.
  • Routes 40 & 41: Timepoint changes were enacted to alleviate confusion with the Julia St/US Hwy 1 interline point.
  • Route 60: Frequency was increased from hourly service to every 30 minutes Monday through Saturday, interlining with Route 20 was discontinued, and the western terminus was shifted to the Amelia Ave SuperStop (Transfer Point) by the Northgate Shopping Center. Customers wishing to visit the WalMart on US 17 will need to transfer to Route 20.

Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA)

Here’s a brief overview of the service changes that took effect for PSTA back on February 5, 2017.

  • Route 4: Sunday service now ends after 9:00pm, instead of ending after 5:00pm.
  • Route 7: Saturday service now ends after 9:00pm, instead of ending after 6:00pm. Sunday service now ends after 8:00pm, instead of ending after 5:00pm.
  • Route 11: Sunday service now ends after 6:00pm instead of ending after 4:00pm. Also, Sunday frequency is now hourly throughout the day. Previously, buses ran every two hours throughout the day on Sundays.
  • Route 14: Service now ends after 9:00pm Monday through Saturday and after 8:00pm on Sundays. Service previously ended after 8:00pm on weekdays, after 7:00pm on Saturdays, and after 5:00pm on Sundays. Sunday frequency has also increased from every two hours to hourly service.
  • Routes 18 & 19: Sunday service now runs through 8:00pm (Route 18) & 9:00pm (Route 19) respectively. Both routes used to end after 5:00pm on Sundays.
  • Route 23: Sunday service now ends after 7:00pm, instead of ending after 5:00pm. Sunday frequency has also increased from every two hours to hourly service.
  • Route 52: Saturday frequency was increased from hourly service to every 30 minutes.
  • Route 59: Saturday frequency was increased from hourly service to every 30 minutes; and weekday service now runs through 11:00pm, instead of ending after 8:00pm.
  • Route 61: Minor scheduling changes were enacted to improve efficiency.
  • Route 66L: A northbound trip from the Park St Terminal in Clearwater was added, with the bus departing at 6:05am.
  • Route 73: Saturday frequency is now hourly throughout the day. Previously, buses ran roughly every two hours throughout the day.
  • Route 76: Minor scheduling changes were enacted to improve efficiency.
  • Route 78: The last three weekday round trips now depart the Park St Terminal in Clearwater at 6:10pm, 7:25pm, & 8:35pm. These trips previously departed at 5:40pm, 6:55pm, & 8:05pm respectively. Saturday frequency was increased from hourly service to every 30 minutes. Sunday frequency was increased from every hour & 10 minutes to every 35 minutes.
  • Route 79: Minor scheduling changes were enacted to improve efficiency.
  • Route 98: Whitney Rd deviation was discontinued. Buses now stay on East Bay Dr/Roosevelt Blvd at the US 19 interchange. Those wishing to make transfers to & from the 98 can do so at the stop along Roosevelt Blvd & Dodge St.
  • Route 813 – North County Connector – Dunedin/Palm Harbor: Route has been split into two separate routes to allow for better flex service in the Safety Harbor area. The 813 will continue to serve Westfield Countryside, the Dunedin & Palm Harbor areas, & the Palm Harbor WalMart, and departure times have changed to reflect the split.
  • Route 814 – North County Connector – Safety Harbor (New Route): The Safety Harbor portion of the 813 is now the 814, serving Westfield Countryside, the Safety Harbor area, & Philippe Park every hour Monday through Saturday. The new route replaces the Safety Harbor Jolley Trolley.
  • Jolley Trolley – Safety Harbor Branch (Route Elimination): After a three-year run, the Safety Harbor branch of the Jolley Trolley was eliminated due to funding changes (the city of Safety Habor elected not to continue funding for the trolley beyond 2016).
  • New Hours for TD Late Shift: 10:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m.

PSTA OCTOBER 2, 2016 SERVICE CHANGES – PARTS 2 AND 3

On Sunday, October 2, 2016; the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) enacted a major revamp of key bus routes with the goal of streamlining service and improving efficiency and reliability throughout the system. These changes include the introduction of four new bus routes and substantial changes to 12 others – including the Jolley Trolley. I was originally going to make three posts in the series, with this post discussing changes made to key central Pinellas routes. However, due to Hurricane Matthew, I’ve decided to combine the two into one post.


Improving Clearwater and Northern Pinellas Service

Various routes in Central and Northern Pinellas were revised to improve system efficiency and eliminate notoriously long runs that caused entire routes to be inefficient. The most radical change was in North Pinellas, where routes in Dunedin, Tarpon Springs, Countryside, and Clearwater were changed.

With almost never-ending construction on Ulmerton Rd, Route 59 was continually bogged down in delays – which in-turn caused the entire route to run inefficiently. To help remedy this problem, the 59 was truncated at the 34th St N Platform, with the southern sections being taken over by Routes 4 and 9. Weekday frequency was also streamlined to include 15-minute peak service with 30-minute midday service (with the exception of a 15-minute “pulse” during the noon hours), and 40 to 45-minute evening service (after 6:00pm). Weekend service was left unchanged due to funding constraints, but February 2017’s service changes will yield 30-minute Saturday service and buses running through 11:00pm on weekdays, 10:00pm on Saturdays, and 9:00pm on Sundays.

route-60Route 60 saw no major changes, but did see adjustments made to running and departure times to improve efficiency.

 


IMG_20160325_072210route-61Route 61 was extended to Westfield Countryside via SR 580 to create an additional option for those wanting to commute between the Countryside, Dunedin, and Clearwater areas. The area around Palm Lake Village continues to be served, but the segment of SR 580 between Pinehurst Rd and County Rd 1 is no longer served, and the north-south portion in Dunedin was re-aligned to  Patricia Ave.


route-62Route 62 no longer serves Safety Harbor, and has instead been realigned to operate along SR 580 and McMullen Booth Rd between Westfield Countryside and the Shoppes at Boot Ranch. Service lost from the 62 was compensated via a revised Dunedin/Palm Harbor Connector.


route-66lSince the implementation of the Jolley Trolley Coastal Route back in the late 2000s, service along Alt US Hwy 19 has seen duplication of what could be one single service. PSTA and the company operating the Jolley Trolley agreed to combine the resources of the 66 and the Jolley Trolley Coastal Route into one trolley route. The 66 numbering was retained for a limited stop service that would follow the original local 66’s routing between Clearwater and Tarpon Springs, but service only operates during peak hours on weekdays, in addition to the AM and PM runs to the Clearwater Fundamental Middle School when class is in session.

route-67Route 67 was streamlined so that all trips serve the Nielsen Media Research Campus in Oldsmar. The Forest Lakes Blvd segment between Commerce Rd and Tampa Rd was eliminated. Those in the southern portion of the Forest Lakes subdivision can still use the Tampa/Oldsmar Connector.


route-76Route 76 did not see significant changes to its routing or schedule, but an intermittent service area was added in Downtown Clearwater in the event that the route needs to be detoured due to downtown events.


route-78Route 78’s Dunedin portion was re-aligned to serve the Douglas Ave portion of the 61. Scheduling changes were also made.

 


Changes to the North County Connector

The Tampa/Oldsmar Connector was re-aligned to serve Belcher Rd instead of Countryside Blvd due to demand. Schedules have also been streamlined to where buses now operate every hour on Saturdays, instead of every hour and 15 minutes with the prior route, and buses run a bit later in the day as well.

The Dunedin/Palm Harbor Connector was re-aligned to serve the Safety Harbor/Main St portion of Route 62, while the limited trips to the St. Petersburg College Tarpon Springs Campus was eliminated due to low ridership. Schedules have also been streamlined and buses run a bit later than they used to under the old route.


What’s Next?

Starting February 5, 2017, PSTA will enact another round of service changes that will usher in expanded service for many Pinellas routes. This is able to be done thanks to the increase in the millage rate that PSTA receives from property tax revenues.
