Join the Global Transit Guidebook Virtual Community on Discord!

Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, I was heavily relying on Facebook to create a virtual community for fellow transit enthusiasts, riders, & advocates. As the height of the pandemic lockdowns plagued the globe, many were turning to the Discord platform – which was originally aimed at connecting online gamers with their respective audiences.

With the attempt of making the Global Transit Guidebook Virtual Community Facebook Group the go-to place for sharing website updates, transit news, & other online finds pretty unsuccessful – I decided to give Discord a try in an effort to broaden my reach beyond Facebook, especially since I knew a few people who either rarely used Facebook, or didn’t use it at all.

Several months have passed since I first began using the Discord platform & I have to say that I’m pretty content with how things have come along! As of the writing of this post, the new Global Transit Guidebook Virtual Community server has roughly 20 members, with many of them interacting with one another on a regular basis. I know that with time & effort, this number will grow.

So what can I expect?

If you were a member of the Facebook incarnation of the Global Transit Guidebook Virtual Community or my prior Facebook Group, the Global Transit Guidebook Forum, you can expect to see many similar experiences:

  • Regular discussions relating to public transportation.
  • Regular website updates & update First Look previews.
  • Announcements regarding YouTube uploads & new blog posts.
  • An interactive communication environment for all members.

You’ll also be able to enjoy:

  • Live interactive discussions every Saturday.
    • The Saturday Hangout.
  • Larger Virtual Community Discussion events will be held in a virtual auditorium style environment as the server grows.
  • Off-topic discussion forums & threads (members must follow server rules).
    • I was previously restricting most off-topic discussions in the Facebook Groups.
  • Periodic gaming live streams.
    • SimCity, The Sims 4, Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, Terarria.
    • Members have the ability to alternate between other members’ live streams while still engaged in the interactive discussion.

So how do I join?

If you already have a Discord account, then joining the new server is easy! Simply select the link below & follow the prompts. If you’re new to Discord, creating your account only takes a few minutes & you can do so from most devices. Before you join, please bear in mind the following:

  • All community rules set forth on the GTG website apply to the Discord server as well. Members who violate server rules will be disciplined accordingly.
  • Prospective members will need to have a valid phone number associated with their Discord account (don’t worry, GTG staff does not collect this information). This layer of verification is required in order to minimize the risk of allowing spammers & trollers joining the server.
