AIRPORT TRAVEL ALERT: Jacksonville International Airport

If you’re catching a commercial flight, getting there can sometimes be a hassle. Parking is definitely another, & if the airport you’re traveling to doesn’t have enough spaces available, you might find yourself scrambling to find an alternative option.

On Friday, May 16, 2025, Jacksonville International Airport suffered an incident that has resulted in the dramatic reduction in available on-site parking space for the foreseeable future. A vehicle parked at the airport’s Hourly Parking Garage structure caught fire, with the fire quickly spreading to other parked vehicles on the 3rd level. Airport & government officials estimate that a total of around 50 vehicles may have been impacted, & the heat from the fire resulted in a partial collapse of the 2nd & 3rd levels of the parking structure – leaving travelers unable to retrieve their parked vehicles until structural engineers can assess the safety & integrity of the damaged structure.

We at The Global Transit Guidebook are grateful that there has been no reported injuries or fatalities from this situation & thank the first responder community, the airport authority, & other involved government agencies for their hard work in keeping the situation under control.

If you’re planning to catch a flight to or from Jacksonville, it is not recommended at this time to park at the airport, as the Daily & Economy parking options are limited. Those being picked up or dropped off by others (including ride share) can still access the airport & all other airport functions are operating at or near normal levels. Those who are returning rental vehicles will need to be aware of alternative drop off locations that have been set up.

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) provides daily bus service to & from the airport, & is currently serving the on-property stop just outside the terminal building. Route 1A branch service serves the airport every 30 minutes on weekdays & every hour on weekends. JTA bus service is a good alternative transportation option if heading to or from the airport & convenient connections to other system routes can be made along the Route 1 corridor & in downtown Jacksonville at the Jacksonville Regional Transportation Center (JRTC).

Please stay tuned to local media outlets & check the airport website for further updates on this incident.
