System Overview

StarMetro largely operates using a hub-spoke system, where buses originate out of a central hub – which in this case, is the C.K. Steele Plaza in downtown Tallahassee.
The C.K. Steele Plaza serves all StarMetro routes, except the L Route.
Most routes operate Monday through Saturday, with a few routes operating every 30 minutes & the rest hourly. There is limited evening & Sunday service with four routes operating hourly. StarMetro does not operate on major holidays such as Independence Day, Thanksgiving, or Christmas.

Vehicle Fleet

StarMetro primarily uses Gillig vehicles, with a small portion of the fleet being Proterra-built battery electrics. The agency has a total of about 71 fixed-route buses in the fleet, with a fleet of cutaway vans for paratransit & flex services. In the past, the agency has had GM New Look, GM RTS, New Flyer D40LF buses.
Below is a glance of the buses that StarMetro currently operates.

Gillig Low Floor BRT Diesel
In 2005, StarMetro began ordering Gillig Low Floor buses with the BRT styling, featuring a single-piece windshield.

Gillig Low Floor CNG
In 2014, StarMetro began ordering CNG-fueled Gillig Low Floor buses. There are three fleets of these buses that operate on regular routes.

Proterra Battery Electrics
EcoRide, Catalyst, & ZX5 models
StarMetro began trying out Proterra battery electric buses in 2012 with the 35′ EcoRide model. The agency also has 35′ Catalyst models – which along with the EcoRide models, operate on the Florida State University Seminole Express shuttle routes. In 2021, the agency ordered three ZX5 models to operate on regular routes.
Gillig Low Floor Plus Battery Electric
In 2022, StarMetro ordered two pilot Gillig Low Floor Plus Battery Electric units. The agency was able to obtain additional funding to order eight more units, which should be delivered later in 2025.

Fleet Gallery
I do sincerely apologize for the quality of some of the bus fleet photos, as my 2014 & 2021 visits to Tallahassee were for family events – thus I did not really have enough time to capture a ton of photos, nor get very good shots of them. My 2017 stopover was my only time by which I got decent bus photos.
