This page provides a brief overview of the various major capital projects that are being planned or executed by the Hillsborough Transit Authority. Due to funding constraints, some projects have been indefinitely paused.
Please note that this page only highlights the major-scale projects that are being planned or are underway.

Heavy Maintenance Facility Overhaul & Expansion
HART’s Operations Center (including its heavy maintenance facility) date back several decades, with much of its overall infrastructure & buildings pre-dating the agency’s formation as a heavy freight truck depot. These facilities are woefully inadequate to handle the modern needs of a public transit agency.
Florida Ave/Fowler Ave Arterial Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)
An arterial BRT corridor is being proposed to run between Downtown Tampa & the University area via Florida Ave & Fowler Ave. The project was originally designed to encompass many of the features that the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) possesses for its SunRunner BRT corridor. However, due to funding constraints & changes in state law, the project has seen some alterations. Currently, execution of the project will likely be indefinitely paused due to funding constraints – including uncertainty regarding federal funding.

Tampa Streetcar Extension & Modernization
For many years, the TECO Line Streetcar has brought many riders to Ybor City, the Channelside area, & the southern fringe of Downtown Tampa. Efforts have been underway during the past decade to eventually bring an extension of the streetcar to Tampa Heights, as well as modernize the existing line & bring forth modern streetcar vehicles.
Unfortunately, due to funding constraints & the state court overturning of a 2018 countywide sales tax referendum that was aimed at drastically improving transportation throughout Hillsborough County, this project is on indefinite pause – though some planning activities continue.
